National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum

History

The Hall of Fame was dedicated on June 12, 1939 by Lee Ferrick Andrews, grandson of Edward Clark, who was a founder of the Singer Sewing Machine Company. Stephen C. Clark was owner of a local hotel and sought to bring tourists to Cooperstown, which had been suffering economically when the Great Depression significantly reduced the local tourist trade and Prohibition devastated the local hops industry. His granddaughter, Jane Forbes Clark, is the current Chairman of the Board of Directors. The erroneous claim that U.S. Civil War hero Abner Doubleday invented baseball in Cooperstown, a claim made by former National League president Abraham G. Mills and his 1905 Mills Commission, was instrumental in the early marketing of the Hall.

An $8 million library and research facility opened in 1994. Dale Petroskey became the organization's president in 1999.

In 2002, Baseball As America was launched, a traveling exhibit that toured ten American museums over six years. The Hall of Fame has also sponsored educational programming on the Internet to bring the Hall of Fame to schoolchildren who might not visit. The Hall and Museum completed a series of renovations in spring 2005. The Hall of Fame also presents an annual exhibit at FanFest at the Major League Baseball All-Star Game.

Jeff Idelson replaced Petroskey as president on April 16, 2008. He had been acting as president since March 25, 2008, when his predecessor was forced to resign for "fail[ing] to exercise proper fiduciary responsibility" while making "judgments that were not in the best interest of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum."

The museum

According to the Hall of Fame, approximately 350,000 visitors enter the museum each year, and the running total has surpassed 14 million. These visitors see only a fraction of its 35,000 artifacts, 2.6 million library items (such as newspaper clippings and photos) and 130,000 baseball cards.

First floor

Baseball at the Movies houses baseball movie memorabilia while a screen shows footage from those movies.
The Bullpen Theater is the site of daily programming at the museum (trivia games, book discussions, etc.) and is decorated with pictures of famous relief pitchers.
The Halper Gallery contains rotating exhibits.
Induction Row contains artifacts pertinent to the most recent inductees and photos of past Hall of Fame Weekends.
The Perez-Steele Art Gallery features art of all media related to baseball.
The Plaque Gallery, the most recognizable site at the museum, contains induction plaques of all members.
The Sandlot Kids Clubhouse has various interactive displays for young children.
Scribes and Mikemen honors J. G. Taylor Spink Award and Ford C. Frick Award winners with a photo display and has artifacts related to baseball writing and broadcasting. Floor-to-ceiling windows at the Scribes and Mikemen exhibit face an outdoor courtyard with statues of Johnny Podres and Roy Campanella (representing the Brooklyn Dodgers 1955 championship team), and an unnamed AAGPBL player. A Satchel Paige statue was unveiled and dedicated during 2006 Induction Weekend.

Second floor

The Grandstand Theater features a 12 minute multimedia film. The 200 seat theater, complete with replica stadium seats, is decorated to resemble old Comiskey Park.
The Game is the major feature of the second floor. It is where the most artifacts are displayed. The Game is set up in a timeline format, starting with baseball's beginnings and culminating with the game we know today. There are several offshoots of this meandering timeline:

The Babe Ruth Room

Diamond Dreams (women in baseball)
Viva Baseball! (celebrates baseball in the Carribean Basin)
Pride and Passion (Negro Leagues exhibit)
Taking The Field (19th century baseball)

The Today's Game exhibit is built like a baseball clubhouse, with 30 glass-enclosed locker stalls, one for each Major League franchise. In each stall there is a jersey and other items from the designated big league team, along with a brief team history. A center display case holds objects donated to the Hall of Fame from the past year or two. Fans can also look into a room designed to look like a manager's office. Outside is a display case with rotating artifacts. Currently the space is devoted to the World Baseball Classic.

Third floor

Autumn Glory is devoted to post-season baseball and has, among other artifacts, replicas of World Series rings. Hank Aaron: Chasing the Dream An Education Gallery hosts school groups and, in the summer, presentations about artifacts from the museum's collection. In the gallery foyer is a TV that continually plays baseball bloopers and the popular Abbott and Costello routine "Who's on First?" and a display case with rotating exhibits. The Records Room has charts showing active and all-time leaders in various baseball statistical categories. The statistics charts are posted on the walls, leaving the center space for other purposes: BBWAA awards: Replicas of various awards distributed by the BBWAA at the end of each season, along with a list of past winners. A case dedicated to Ichiro Suzuki setting the major league record for base hits in a single season, with 262 in 2004. A case full of World Series Rings from prior years from the 1900s to present. An inductee database touch-screen computer with statistics for every inductee.
Programs from every World Series. Sacred Ground is the newest museum section, opened after the 2003–05 renovation. It is devoted entirely to ballparks and everything about them, especially the fan experience and the business of a ballpark. The centerpiece is a computer tour of Boston's old South End Grounds, Comiskey Park, and Ebbets Field.

Online Privacy vs Publicity

Privacy is a right that we take for granted. We hope to keep our business to ourselves, and we have all kinds of safeguards and protective measures to protect it that way. We make tall walls and fences and live behind locked door. We use safes, banks, safety deposit boxes and other various methods to keep our personal items and information private. But are these conventional physical methods adequate anymore? Are they even helpful? The information age has arrived and with it our definitions of privacy may need to be rewritten.

In any facet of modern society, the most valuable assets you can have to be information. No matter what kind of activities you’re involved in, you can be certain that the right kind of information exchange matter very much. Today, it is not just enough to be your self, you have to be yourself and make a name for your self, if you are to be succeeded. To do this, you have to share certain thing about yourself. For the average person, this phenomenon is most obvious in the social arena, especially in the social networking arena. Facebook, Twitter, hi5 and other social oriented sites are the way to interact with the people. Let’s face it, if you are a tech savvy urban dweller; the first thing you do, is probably search him or her on facebook. Sites like are a treasure trove of personal information of individuals. Most people have posted details on these sites that they would not dare reveal on real life. What they do not relies is that putting thing on social networking sites is potentially just as public as saying it out loud. Websites are public by nature, so you should never put any thing you want to keep secret, online at all. Many of our services are fast moving online, and online services will always require a certain amount of personal data in order to authenticate the user. But as users, we must always make certain that we have to control over the information we provide. As much publicized example was when Facebook used photos of one of its users in an advertising campaign, without that user’s knowledge. It turned out that, because of the lack of knowledge of Facebook privacy settings, the user has unwittingly authorized the uses of photo.

The thing to do hare is to be aware of situation. Online privacy is highly subjective, and it takes time and experiences to properly understand. For example, the same rule to do not apply to your online banking and your social site. They are two completely different things, and you give them completely different level of information and whether alright with that. Always give as little information as you can, because it is safer that way, till you know ho to handle your online privacy.

Fish keeping

FishFish keeping or rearing is a great hobby among teenagers and even adult in whole over the world. Some do it on small scale, others on a big scale. But nearly every home has just a few fish in a bowl in side house.

FishYoung boys, especially school boys have taken to this hobby with a lot of interest and at great expense. In some houses, there are aquariums of various shapes, size, and colors. There are adult and even Companies which deal in fish and fly them across the seas.

FishFish keeping is a very good hobby because it keeps young boys engaged in their leisure hours and come to know about life in big way. How delightful it is to know the habits of multi-colored fish like the ‘Angels’, ‘Gouramies’, ‘Siamese Fighters’, ‘Zebras’, ‘Sword-tail’, ‘jewel fish’, ‘horse fish’, and scores of other fish that swim so beautifully in the glass – cages and live safety in these concrete-glass ‘prison’. They seem so happy and contented.

As in any other business or industry, there is the sale of fish and bartering. These rearers also learn the art of inter-breeding fish and so getting hybrids. It is a wonderful experience to talk to some these teenagers and see how much of knowledge they have gained from this paying and entering hobby.

Before apply for job online

Oh yes indeed, very single thing that we do has become more advanced and involves the latest technology; even applying for jobs and sitting down the interviews. No more rifling through the classifieds columns of newspapers, looking under the respective subject for the perfect job opening, having to sit down to an intimidating job interviews, facing a group of hard unknown faces; every single thing has changed.

Now, all you need to do is connect to the internet and type whatever job you’re looking for, apply for it online as well, sit back and wait for the magic to do its trick. It’s really that easy, but there of course the ups and downs of applying and working online, as well as plenty of do’s and don’ts in the same area.

There is, without a doubt more job opportunities available online than ever before, which is a huge plus point for even a student who is looking for a part time job during his/her vacation, and of course, it cuts of the hassle of going through probably s thousands classified ads, whereas surfing online would get the search done in next to no time. The only catch to applying for a job online would be that, there are plenty of chances of giving out personal information and details to anything such as web or anyone whom you have never met you before, may be risky; besides, who can you really trust behind the computer screen, unless, of course, it is a highly acclaimed business, unlike other odd jobs.

So make sure you research on the kind of job you’re looking for applying and sending information to; in a few weeks or even few days time, you surely don’t want strangers contacting you and asking you to do preposterous things or bothering you for life. Be safe and know what you’re getting into; it may seem and surely look a lot easier, but there is a whole new and different world out of there on the internet.

Most often, people are not prepared for the kinds of questions directed at or asked of them, and it certainly doesn’t do you any good, when you’re stuck speechless. It is always important to know that whichever job you are now applying to, is the one you really want; by clearing that off your checklist, you are sure to be confident enough to get off to a decent beginning.

State your interests in a manner that make you sound like someone with great personality and of course, lively. Your education qualifications play an important role here, so be sure to note down your credential correctly and in a right order. If you want to make sure you nab this job, then you’re going to have to go an extra mile, by being a bit forward; not too much to scare anyone away, but to make them certain that you’re indeed serious about your work and have it in you to do something great.

Don’t fret or let other people’s bad experiences freak you out; just be yourself and go with the flow. Go get that job.

Eco- Adventure

Sri Lanka blessed with an abundance of flora and fauna has a long radiation of conservation. This goes back to its ancient Buddhist tradition which teaches respect and compassion to all living things. The world’s first wild life sanctuary was set up by Royal edict in the 3rd C.B.C. in Mihintale
(Where the Buddhist doctrine was first preached) and is still a sanctuary. Understanding the importance of conservation ecological integrity, large wilderness tracts were set aside by successive rulers as reserves for rain catchments and pest control purposes. Today, the sanctuaries, national parks, and reserves where law protects flora and fauna comprise 14% of the Island’s total land area of 65610sq, Km.

Within this land area there are more than 70 sanctuaries, National parks & a number of wetlands and mountain ranges. Therefore the bio- diversity in Sri Lanka is regarded to be greater per sq. Meter of surface area than any other country in the Asian Region. When Sri Lanka’s ecosystem is compared with other Asian countries, Sri Lanka has many tropical rain forests, montane, lowland, and virgin forests and wetland. There are also many ecosystems with mangroves, sand dunes, beaches and coral reefs. Numbering over 220, Sri Lanka for its size has perhaps the largest number of waterfalls of any country in the world.

Sri Lanka is a global bio-diversity hot spot. About half of its species are endemic, including all fresh water crabs, 90% amphibians, 25-75% reptiles and vertebrates, around 50% fresh water fishes, 26% flowering plants, 145 mammals and as many as non migrant birds.

Species richness is extreme and there are known to be over 3,368 species of flowering plants, 314 ferns, 575 mosses, 190liverworts, 896 algae, 1920 fungi, 400 orchids, 242 butterflies, 117 dragonflies, and damselflies, 139 mosquitoes, 525 carabis beetles, 266 land snails, 78 fresh water fishes, 250 amphibians, 92 snakes, 35 fresh water crabs, 21 geckos, 21 shrinks, 322 non- migrant birds. The island also provides critical habitat for internationally mobile species, including5 species of endangered marine turtles, about 100 species of waterfowls, and many other migratory birds.

The Flora of Sri Lanka

The flora of Sri Lanka means the plant life of Sri Lanka. Our country being a tropical one with plenty of rain and sunshine, we have an abundance of green life. The island almost throughout the year is covered by a green carpet grass. There are then, the herbs, bigger plants, trees, palms and the jungle giants.

The herbs and smaller plants form the category of medicinal plants and vegetables and even creepers. The bigger plants provide fruits, the palms yield food and drink and the giants of the jungle give wood for furniture and fuel. Some of Sri Lanka herbs are so rare that it is said many medicine men come to Sri Lanka for certain herbs found here, but absent even in the Himalayan hills.

With nearly every Sri Lanka meal, vegetable s come from the plants and creepers, Toddy and fruits come from the palms like the coconut, Palmyra and Jaggery palms. The giants of the jungle, some over 500 years old as ebony, satin, teak and mahogany etc. provide wood for furniture, some of which are exported.

Animal life has protection from our flora and the tall trees bring down the rain which otherwise would have passed over without giving the life-giving waters from the heavens above. The thousands of birds and myriads of insects find a safe shelter in, on, among and under our wide and varied flora.

A trip to Ajantha Caves-India

We started from Bashavel in the wee hours of morning, after few hours, we are near a mountain. Located just 40 km Jalgaon city of Maharasta, India, lying in the middle of a steep horseshoe shaped rock; Ajantha comprises 30 temples like caves hewn into the heart of rock. The caves are surprisingly large and rich with Buddhist sculpture of the highest craftsmanship and more importantly, paintings of infinite charm. Though I knew that a chisel and hammer under the command of a skilled artiste can do wonders, I never thought it could be this magnitude.

It is a well maintained site, as is the case with any other site of either culture or religious value in India. Private vehicles are not allowed up to the caves, with a huge amenity centre built at the end of Ajantha Ghat, 4km away from the caves. From there, you have to take a pollution free bus to reach the caves through a reserved tropical forest. The hill range opposite the caves provides natural protection to the caves. A solitary place with a panoramic view surrounded by greenery a river flowing in the ravine. It makes it an ideal place for pious Buddhist monks to meditate. The river called Waghors, flows through seven small waterfalls called Saptkund. Before it enter the caves in form of a beautiful waterfall- a very pleasing site indeed during rainy season. Mother natures’ creativity at Ajantha, horseshoe shaped rock a bunch of waterfalls, a stream serpenting beneath strong impression that natural beauty is far ahead of man made wonders.

Believed to have been built around 2nd century BC, the caves remained unknown to the modern world until 1819, due to debris gathered within the caves, when it was accidentally discovered by John Smith, a British captain. Most of the painting in Ajantha is from the 2nd BC, while some of them are about the 5th century AD, and continued for next two centuries. Though there 30 caves, only 26 caves can be visited, as there is no proper access to rest. It had been a great monastery with the capacity to house thousands of monks. All the caves are numbered accordingly. Caves 9, 10, 19, and 16, are chaitya halls. Carving Stupas’ inside a rock cut cave needs a higher degrees of engineering skills.

In Ajantha, Hinayana and Mahayana have their separate caves. Since there was no idol worship in the Hinayana sect, no statues other than painted emblems of Buddha are seen in such caves, whereas, Mahayana caves are full of idols and paintings Sitting Buddhas’ statues at Mahayanic caves, have been carved with the leg touching the ground, so that worshipers have access to Buddha’s feet, because foot worship popular among the Mahayana followers.

Ajantha is famous for painting depicting scenes from Jathaka stories and Buddha’s life. Some caves are entirely painted. Some Hinayanic caves have been pillars fully painted with Jathaka stories. Rock cut staircase at Ajantha despite a mirror wall, look similar to the stone step at Sigiriya which in Sri Lanka, given the high elevation and the manner it goes along the main rock face up to the lion’s foot.

What are needs of disabled?

Worldwide, men and women with the disabilities have relatively better life chance today than a decade or more ago. For one thing, disability has come out in to open. Disabled person have fought the practice of incarceration in residential homes and hospitals, a ‘treatment’ which was legitimate not only in the Middle east and Asia, but in the Western world.

There is a sense among the able-bodied that disabled people need their protection. Concern with the welfare of disabled people seen as ‘charitable’. Yet these breakthroughs can only be partially attributed to a change of heart on the part of the able-bodied decision makers at national and international level. Achievements and successes in advocacy work on disability can be attributed in the large measure to the effort and perseverance of groups of disabled people.

The disability movement is, in many countries, pro-active, strong, and involved in advocacy on the rights of the disabled. Disabled activists in the Middle East for instance, have become more vocal on essential issues such as right for disabled persons, representation, and full integration and independence. Fifteen years ago, such initiatives were in their infancy. Even now, such successes remain small-scale in comparison to the need; and possible only when lobbying groups have gained strength and negotiating power, and receive the goodwill and co-operation of the public.

However, people’s attitudes towards the disabled have been slow in changing world, towards the general discrimination meted out towards the disabled, the message form the non-disabled world, towards the disabled is that lives of the disabled persons are not worth living. Both men and women with disabilities are made to feel ‘deferent’; they fail to conform to a traditionally and socially agreed norm of beauty and strength. Pity, condescension, embarrassment, or a mixture of the three is the reactions most commonly encountered by men and women who have a disability, from non-disabled people. Many activists believe that v people are in some senses considered by able-bodied people, to be less than human.

The Land of Gem

Throughout history, Sri Lanka has been known as a land of gems. King Solomon was said to have procured a great ruby for the Queen of Sheba from Ceylon (Sri Lankas former name). Marco Polo (1293AD) wrote about the ruby that once graced the Ruwanweliseya Pagoda at Anuradhapura…” a flawless ruby span long and quite as thick as a man’s arm.”

The400 carat blue sapphire called “Blue Belle” which adorns the British Crown is from Sri Lanka. The Beautiful star sapphire misnamed the “Star of India” (on permanent display in the Museum of Natural History in New York) is another Sri Lankan treasure.

Rathnapura is the most famous gem-mining locality in Sri Lanka. At the National Museum, Gemological Museum, the Rathnapura Gem Bureau and Museum or in many other gem workshops in Rathnapura, one can get the rare opportunity to see a variety of precious stones such as rubies, sapphires, cat’s eyes, alexandrite, aquamarines, tourmalines, spinals, topaz, garnets, amethyst, zircons etc. and also the traditional ways of cutting and polishing gem stones.

Rathnapura is situated at the foot of the 2243 meter high Adam’s Peak. All four major religions claim Adam’s Peak as a holy mountain. Buddhist calls the mountain Siripada (the sacred footprint) and believes the Lord Buddha has visited this mountain and set his sacred footprint. Hindus say it is Lord Shiva’s and Muslims believe that it is the place where Adam first set foot on earth. Catholics say it is of St. Thomas the Christian apposite who preached in South India the pilgrimage season is from December to April. However the journey to Adam’s Peak is more convenient via Hatton and Dalhousie than via Rathnapura.

MNIK - Incomplete review

My name is Khan…. And I’m not a TERRORIST

A story of love, tragedy, religion, determination, and poor innocence all of this merged into one beautiful story. My name is Khan is a definite must-watch!

It’s true that lately there is an overdose of movies based on terrorism, but my name is Khan takes a new turn and portrays it in a subtle yet firm approach.

What makes the movie so special is the lead role of ‘Rizwan Khan’ played by Shah Rukh Khan’ Shah Rukh, who has Asperger’s syndrome, a milder form of autism, impairs Rizan’s social communication skills and gives him some odd behavior patterns. Rizwan can’t stand loud sounds or bear to see the color yellow. He constantly rotates beads while murmuring a comforting prayer at times of stress. He can barely bring himself to be very physically close to someone, and therefore, avoids even hugging. Some look at him as being crazy, but, in fact, he proves them all wrong.

The scenes of Rizwan’s childhood are emotional and strong in the film, his mother is one of the few who truly understands rizwan’s condition, and teaches him the golden lessons of life, which he later applies at every stage of his life. the film’s delicate and touching scenes take a sudden turn , when we shift to San Francisco, and that is where Rizwan fall in love.

Despite his odd condition, and unusual ways, he finds love and a family with mandira, played by Kajol. Mandira has a son, Sam, from a previous marriage.
As most have already guessed the core of the film revolves around of the film revolves around Rizwan’s life after the 9/11 attack.

In front of Mermaids Legendary

Mermaids are the legendary creature with the tail of a fish and a half-human top. They often considered magical with ability to give people power or to predict the future. Mermaids frequently fall in live with men. They attract men with beautiful songs and music to death by downing. They also transform in to human women eat men when they are tamed

Classically, a mermaid is seated on rock by the sea, with her golden here and fishtail dipped into the water and she holds a comb and a mirror in hand.

The mermaid’s male is merman. Mermaids’ legends began with the worship of gods. Oannes was a sea-god of the Babylonia. Poseidon was Greek god of the sea. Neptune was the Roman god of the sea. Triton was a Greek a messenger of the sea. They were often depicted as half-fish.

Among the many gods of India, the apsaras (celestial flute-playing water-nymphs) were worshiped by fishermen. Water-nymphs could be mistaken for mermaids because of their beauty in appearance and their musical talents, which mermaids are well known for.

As to merfolk originally, British mermaids did not have tails. It was which the sailors from the Mediterranean trading, that the idea of the half-human, half-fish creature become more popular.

Email vs Snail Mail

Electronic mail, called e-mail was started in the late 1960‘s by the armed forces of the United States of America. The army or military officers were looking for a way that communication could be carried out in the event of a large-scale nuclear war. They needed a system that would be very decentralized, reliable, and fast in case central institutions were destroyed. They came up with e-mail.

In the early 1970’s, e-mail was limited to the United States military, defense contractor and universities doing defense research. By the 1970’s it had begun to spread more broadly within university communities. By 1980’s, academics in a number of university disciplines were using e-mail for professional collaboration. The early 1990’s saw an explosion of the use of e-mail and other computer networking tool for a wide range of professional, academic, and personal purposes. Whereas a few thousand people were using e-mail in 1980, it was estimated that in 2000, more than 25 million people throughout the world were using it.

E-mail is a way of sending a message from one computer around the world. First, you write down the e-mail address of the person you’re sending the message to. Then you compose the message, either by writing it directly in a special e-mail software program or by writing it first in a word –processing program, then transferring it into the e-mail software. You push a button to issue a simple command to send the message. The computer system you’re connected to will break the message up into tiny pieces and send them electronically to the destination, usually over common telephone lines. The pieces might travel through different routes to various computers on the way. Then, usually within two to three minutes, the pieces will all arrive at their destination, where the receiving computer will re-assemble them into a message that can be read. The person receiving the message can then log into his or her computer account at convenient time and read the mail.

Earn money via AdSense

Google uses its Internet search technology to serve advertisements based on webpage inclusion. Lots of websites use AdSense to earn money via their inclusion. They use a wider range of bandwidth-generating techniques, including but not limited to online advertising. They create valuable content on their websites that attracts AdSense advertisements, which pay out the most when visitors are clicked. They use text content on their websites that encourages visitors to click on advertisements. But Google prohibits webmasters from using word groups like "Click on my AdSense ads" to increase click rates. The phrases accepted are "Sponsored Links" and "Advertisements".

History

Oingo, Inc., that is privately held company located in Los Angeles. It was started in 1998 by Gilad Elbaz and Adam Weissman. Oingo. It developed a proprietary search algorithm that was based on word meanings and built upon an underlying lexicon called WordNet, It was developed over the previous 15 years by researchers at Princeton University. Oingo changed its name to Applied Semantics in 2001.It was later acquired by Google in April 2003 for US$102 million.

How AdSense works

The webmaster inserts the AdSense JScript code into a webpage. Each time this page is visited, the JavaScript code uses inlined JSON to display content fetched from Google's servers. For contextual advertisements, Google's servers use a cache of the page to determine a set of high-value keywords. If keywords have been cached already, advertisements are served for those keywords based on the AdWords bidding system. For site-targeted advertisements, the advertiser chooses the pages on which to display advertisements, and the price advertisers choose to pay for every thousand advertisements displayed. Search advertisements are added to the list of results after the visitor performs a search. Because the JScript is sent to the Web browser when the page is requested, it is possible for other website owners to copy the JScript code into their own WebPages.

For a world without landmine

Landmine-busting teams are fighting a losing battle: for every mine that is cleared, 20 new ones are laid. A year after the death of Britain’s Princess Diana, whose high profile trips to Angola and Bosnia highlighted the scourge of landmines, donation were still pouring on to fund the mammoth task of clearing an estimated 100 million unexploded mines scattered across 70 countries from Angola to Afghanistan.

Although 126 countries have now signed the 1997 Ottawa Convention banning landmines, a child is either maimed or killed by a landmine somewhere in the world every hour, according to the United Nation. Some experts think they are going to have to change their ways before they can beat one of the world’s most cruel menaces.

Ingenious devices have been designed to make mine clearing easier. In the last year, engineers have come up with a string of ingenious devices to enable mine clearing teams to work faster and more cheaply, but some experts believe the only way to make a difference would be to ease tight security standards on de-mining.

So far, none of the recent inventions, including a remote-controlled sweeper, a wind-up detector and a ‘sniffer’ that search for mines like dog, have passed a test for 99.8% efficiency in the field. Safe and liable equipment is the priority for highly trained teams risking their lives to save others.

However, expert in the Mines Advisory Group (MAG) are wary of cheap and easy answer unless they prove to be totally secure. MAG, which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997 for its campaign to ban anti-personal mines, works in six of the most mine ridden-countries. So far, it says, it has seen no real impact from the new technologies. “Too many devices are developed with little understanding of the real practices of landmine clearance or the real condition of the world.”

What not to do Valentine’s Day

Oh yes it’s that time of the year again when the flowers begin to blossom and the earth never felt so fresh; spring is surely in the air and so in l.o.v.e. Every magazine, article or programme is on the spot to tell you exactly where you should go, what you should do and what you should get for your significant other but today you’re going to get a good dose of what you should NOT to just so that Valentine’s day doesn’t become ‘just another day’ to celebrate your love.

Do NOT have expectations

It’s a killer when you have high and romantic expectations; a candlelight dinner at the most expensive restaurant in town, the biggest pendant at Swarovski, and dozen blood red roses and a box of Ferraro Roche chocolates to go with it does seem like the perfect way to go but you also have to understand and realistic; unless of course your man is a millionaire.

Do NOT drop hint

Don’t we all do it; even the guys! We want something an entire week before the big day, we’re off dropping little hint likes Hansel and Gretel dropping bread crumbs.

Do NOT compare and do NOT boast

Sure us girls would get jealous if another from amongst us got something better and fancier from her guy, but it’s important to remember to be understanding and happy with what you get; your friend might have got a larger bunch of roses or was taken on a holiday someplace exotic and You might have just had a simpler dinner at home or at nearest restaurant but don’t forget – it’s that thought that counts and you should be more than happy to let alone have someone to celebrate with than who might not.

Do NOT be typical

You are you and no one can change that but its’ also healthy to be spontaneous and do something different than you’re usually comfortable with; guy if you want the latest PS3 game, don’t get it for her and play it yourself – buy it for yourself and get her something she might like for a change. Why don’t you make reservations for a dinner out for change or make memory?

Do NOT make excuses

Valentine’s Day is certainly not the day to make any kind of excuses for anything,”I’m tired” or “I have really bad headache and need to get some sleep” is the ultimate punch line and none of you want upset the other. Make an effort, stay healthy and be perky.

Do NOT rush

NOT too big and NOT too small

No one want a tiny gift that makes one feel under-appreciated cause you couldn’t get him or her some thing big enough to be thrilled about; on the other hand a large gift, let’s say a trip out of town.

Do NOT buy him or her, what you want for yourself

It’s important to remember that this day isn’t just YOUR day alone, it’s a day to be shared with your loved one so you got to let loose a bit and give in; compromise a little bit and give each other what they really want.

Pollution in Water

Nearly 97% of the earth's water is salt water; another 2% is locked in ice caps and glaciers. That leaves just 1% as fresh water suitable for farming, recreation manufacturing, washing, and drinking,

Water is undoubtedly the most precious natural resource that exists on earth. It’s essential for everything on our planet o grow and prosper. Although we recognize this fact, disregard it by polluting our rivers, lake and ocean. We are slowly but surely harming our planet to the point where innocent organisms are dying even at this very moment.

Also our drinking water has become greatly affected and soon we will have to think about ourselves. In order to combat Water pollution occur when a body of water is adversely affected due to the addition of large amounts of pollutant materials to the water. When it is unfit for its intended use, water is considered polluted.

These harmful substances can either emitted directly into a body of water our indirectly through environmental changes. An example of latte is fertilizer from a field carried into a stream by rain, in the form of run-off, which is very common in agricultural areas.

Polluted WaterEstimates suggest that nearly 1.5 billion people lack safe drinking water and that at least 5 million deaths per year can be attributed to waterborne diseases. Raw sewage, garbage and oil spills have diluted the oceans and most coastal waters. Beaches around the world are polluted by sewage disposal and marine wildlife is beginning to suffer.

The major sources of water pollution can be classified as municipal, industrial and agricultural waste water runoff. Since the birth of “Chemical Age”, water quality has been heavily impacted worldwide by industrial and agricultural chemical. Pollution of surface water from human and agricultural waste and nutrification of groundwater from agricultural practices has greatly affected part of the World.

Global environmental collapse is not inevitable. But the developed world must work with the developing world to ensure that new industrialized economies do not contribute to the worlds’ environmental problem. Politician must think of sustainable development rather than economic expansion. Conservation strategies have to become more widely accepted, and people must learn that energy use can be dramatically diminished without sacrificing comfort. In short, with the technology that currently exists, the years of global environmental mistreatment can begin to be reversed.

Space Travel is Important

The Americans have beaten the Russians in the space race, in that, the Americans were the first to land a man on the moon. It is a tribute to America that their men took the chance and made a pioneering landing on the moon led by Neil Armstrong.

The high cost of spending millions of dollars has been in vain because the landing on the moon was a small step for man, but a great step for mankind
.

Now the have explored the moon several times and the experiments are of immense the knowledge of the solar system and man's ability to be in space. The matter brought from the moon has helped so many things about preserving things for a long a time, about bacteria, their benefits and good. Lunar chemicals have been helping scientists to turn them to construction purposes.

Men never believed that the moon could be ever reached. Now that it has been reached, the question arises whether men could be sent out there to populate it. Further research can only tell. Meanwhile the whole world awaits with great expectation the great good that can come out of Space Travel. Let's hope it is for the benefits of all mankind.

The Fauna of Sri Lanka

This tropical paradise of ours is rich its fauna. The myriads of insects that creep, crawl and fly , the thousands of reptiles that creep in the jungle and water, the quadrupeds that stampede across the jungle and the flocks of birds that perch on the branches of trees are Sri Lanka's treasure. The centipede, the scorpion, the ants of various hues and venom, the snakes from the viper and the cobra to the mighty python and the iguanas inhabit in lower sections of the terrain.

The graceful deer, the mighty elephants, sambur, elk, moose, deer, leopard, porcupine, pangolin, ant-eater, wild-boar, weasel, scores of other quadrupeds are the delights of tourists who often see them in their natural habitats and yala and other sanctuaries.

Above this layer of beautiful wild life, we have the more beautiful multi-colored feathered species, the birds. The proud peacock, the King fisher, the wood-pecker, the teal, snipe, parrot, pigeon and hundreds of colored varieties make sanctuaries like kumana, a birds paradise.

The fauna of Sri Lanka are certainly a treasure that brings in a lot of foreign exchange because tourist come here to see them and they pay well for it. We should preserve our flora to keep our fauna alive and happy. The only danger to them is from the poacher who kills them for their flesh, skin and heads.

Tourism

Tourism is one of sri lanka's latest money spinners.Every plane daily bring scores of tourist along with beneficial dollars, Marks, Pounds and other currencies.thus our foreign exchange earning increase.
Therefore, Sri Lanka which is an under-developed country is getting a new look that is very prosperous. The various hotels have given jobs to our local youth and so have helped to solve our employment problem tom a great extent. No doubt, Tourism has brought in several benefits to our our country but two great disasters have also come in its wake. The first deathly blow to our culture and civilization. Most of the tourist come here in search of the sun, sand and swimming, have also been responsible for a lot of sin.

These tourist with loose morals are corrupting our culture .Young man and girls are brought for money to satisfy their lower instincts and our high moral culture and civilization are receiving a fatal blow. It is better to live poor like the country mouse than to have the good things of life by the sale of our young men and women

The other disaster is the increase in the price of goods as result of these tourist hotel . The poor and middle class have come to the end of their tether. Fish, meat, and vegetable prices have shot up by leafs and bounds because these hotels pay very high prices for these commodities with the result that the common man cannot pay same prices. Cut with tourism, I say. Let us be content with the little we have.

We are in the Age of Computers

This is the age of Robots and Computers. Science has advanced so much that robots and computers reign supreme in the age, which is also called the nuclear age. Robots which look so much as men can do the work of men fast, precisely, strongly, efficiently and beyond all expectation. These robots are mechanical monsters that can show no mercy. They have no soul and they are ruthless when let loose to kill. Like electricity, robots are good servant, but bad masters. Like the Frankestein the robots can kill its master.

The more comfort man seeks, the more his dangers are. If these robots are increased by mass production, then like machines after the industrial revolution, they will bring about an increase in the un-employment market. So like every thing that bring good, it also has evils.

Alongside with robot, man has another monster, the computer has been invented. Like the robot, these computer do a perfect efficient job, again only displace of thousands of workers and swelling the ranks of un-employed. History, they say, repeats itself. In this last quarter of the 20th century, we are having a repeat of the 18th century, when machines took the place of men and displaced thousands. It enriched the rich and impoverished the poor, further.

MNIK for Valentine

The much anticipated Shah Rukh Kajol starter My Name Is Khan (MNIK) hits the screen globally this valentine weekend from February 12."It is emotional drama. It's about a man and his wife but there is a lot of issues and very interesting plot point,"

This film from Director Karan Johar who directed Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Khabie Gham.He also adds that the movie had been the toughest project yet but being able to rope in his 'God Sent Couple' is a triumph itself."the best thing about the film is that one would feel that it is not the same Karan Johar who had made film like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Khabie Gham, who has also set out to make MNIK.

I am of the opinion that to break your form is far more challenging than to play in your on safety zone as a filmmaker by adhering to the norms of the rule and formula and making a film for which you are remembered," he added "MNIK is very special for both Karan and Me. unlike the rumors, it's not about terrorism, or 9/11.

"It's about a relationship between two people, between an individual and state, and between an individual and the country. "In short, there the three important component: love story, Islam and a mild form of autism, which forms the core of MNIK,"explains Shah Rukh who portray the lead role of Rizwan Khan in the movie.

Elephants - Large Land Mammals

Elephants are large land animals of the order Proboscidea and the family Elephantidae. Three living species is still there. They are the African Bush Elephant, the African Forest Elephant and the Asian Elephant (also known as the Indian Elephant). The Mammoths is other species that have become extinct since the last ice age, dwarf forms of which may have survived as late as 2,000 BC, being the best-known of these.

They were once classified along with other thick skinned animals in a now invalid order, Pachydermata. Elephants are the largest animals which still live in these lands on earth. Gestation period of the elephant is 22 months. It is the longest gestation period of any land animal. At birth it is common for an elephant calf to weigh 120 kilograms (260 lb). They typically live for 50 to 70 years, but the oldest recorded elephant lived for 82 years. The largest elephant ever recorded was shot in Angola in 1956. This male weighed about 12,000 kilograms (26,000 lb), with a shoulder height of 4.2 meters (14 ft), a meter (yard) taller than the average male African elephant. The smallest elephants, about the size of a calf or a large pig, were a prehistoric species that lived on the island of Crete during the Pleistocene era.

The Internet

Internet is a huge computer network that is interconnected to huge amount of computer in many countries. It uses the standard Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP) to serve billions of users worldwide. It is a network of networks that consists of millions of private and public, academic, business, and government networks of local to global scope which are linked by a broad array of electronic and optical networking technologies such as satellite connecting cable and many media. The Internet carries a gigantic array of information resources and services such as science and technology, daily news, life and many more.
Most noteworthy the inter-linked hypertext documents of the World Wide Web (WWW) and the infrastructure to support email.

The provenances of the Internet goes back to the 1960s when the United States funded experiment projects of its military agencies to decorate vigorous, fault-tolerant and distributed computer networks. As of 2009, an estimated quarter of Earth's population uses the services of the Internet. The Internet has no centralized governance in either technological execution or observances for access and usage; each constituent network sets its own standards.

An iceberg - One main problem in New World

An iceberg is a large amount of ice broken off a glacier. The wind moves it in the sea. Only a small portion of an iceberg is visible on the sea.Icebergs are threat ships which avoid them by diverting their direction when they see them floating toward them. When these huge ice mountain float, gradually they are melted and layers fall on to the sea.

There had been times that the iceberg from Antarctic and Arctic regions towed by high powered ships to countries where water is scarce. Huge ring are fixed into the icebergs and strong nylon ropes are tied from the ships to the rings.
It has been proved that icebergs contain fresh water which is good for human consumption. However, if this water is used for watering plants. Certain amount of sea water must be added as plants need salt.
